to what extent do you find its the parents fault/responsibility for their child being overweight? or whose to blame?
personally, i think its more the parents fault more than anyone elses. i mean you’re the ones who have to buy the food, you set the rules. if theres no junk food or bad food in the house all the time how can a child be over weight?
excluding all medical problems and medications that result in a child having weight problems.
i saw an episode of maury [yes i know bad show lol but it was the only decent thing on besides the weather network or the news] and this kid was only 3 years old and sooo overweight. come on, you honestly cant tell me that that 3 year old can be to blame, its obviously the parents for giving in to that child and keep giving the child the food.
hollyy
No doubt, Parents are to blame from what we buy or put in our kids mouths to how we structure our kids daily life. So many school systems are doing away with physical activity and it’s just getting worst as kids are unfit to do any activities. Wii and Xbox are the only things kids know. It’s easier to buy a DS or PSP than sign them up for soccer or baseball.
As a kid I ate everything, but I spent a min of 4hrs outside everyday and longer on weekends, (maybe 60min on Nintendo) It’s the total opposite now. TV/Games get all the time and going outside to dig holes in the dirt is a lost art form for youth today. lol!
I understand McDonalds, Coke, and Pepsi don’t make it easier for parents, but parents need to take stand! Get on school officials to add more physical activity, pay the higher tax so you kid can learn to run a mile,(it’s really not that hard) stop saving the tax dollar to buy a playstation!
I blame obama

I agree with you, parents are the ones buying food and are the ones who are feeding the children in early life. Kids aren’t born over-eating and craving junk food and take out- it’s a developed trait that the parents perpetuate. Unless the child actually has a congenital disorder like Prader-Willi in which they lack the hormone that turns off hunger. Even then, the parents have the choice whether they supervise their children or let them eat themselves to death.

ALWAYS parents. Their the ones feeding them right? Yea i saw that Maury thing too pretty disgusting and hilarious.

besides medical conditions, it is the parents fault 100%. How else can anyone be blamed?

ya sorta the parents problem. they let their child snack all the time, doesnt turn off the tv for them to be active ect ect… and doesnt buy healthfull fruits or veggies. so child obesity is a parents problem, and its getting worse around the country every year. every one is getting weight problems and adults shouldnt buy mcdonalds for a weekly meal for there child. not even monthly. people need to realize alot of foods have alot of calories, so read the portion box and no pop or junk like that. kids learn eating habbits. and bad ones at that

Obviously parents have a big share of the responsibility. They are the ones who buy the food and bring it into the house. But marketing has been extremely powerful and successful in promoting junk foods. Fast food and soft drink corporations have managed to convince kids and teens that their products are equated with "cool," and they have managed to associate themselves with almost every organization that kids participate in – including sports, schools, and fundraising. It doesn’t make the parents’ job any easier.

It is 100% the parents responsibility and I mean directly too. Not some "it’s genetics. we’re just big boned" crap either. Quit putting the crap in front of the kids and teach them to say "no thank you. I’m full."

It’s the parents fault. They should be making sure their kids eat healthy at home as well as packing healthy lunches for school.

I think good nutrition starts with the parents. They buy the groceries, plan the menu, cook the food and then serve it. With all the information out there, parents should not have any problems planning healthy meals and watching snacks. They should also see that they get plenty of fresh air and exercise. To many kids are couch potatoes.

Before having a child I would have said that parents are to blame.
I wonder thought how many parents become paranoid of their children not gaining enough weight according to those outdated growth curves doctors use, and as a result over feed their children initially just trying to please their doctors needs, resulting in overweight issues later in life.
Both myself and two close friends were all told/warned that our children needed to gain more weight. All these children were and are healthy thriving toddlers with bellies and chubby thighs. All are breastfed. We were told to butter everything, exclude veggies as they were low in calories, and a few other poor nutrition tips, all from medical doctors so that our children would fit on their pretty charts. My daughter had several extra weigh-ins and I refused to "crap up" her diet. I offered her a variety of healthy foods and if she was hungry she ate them. Let me tell you though, when you have a MD telling you that you have to have your child gain so much weight it is hard to not feed high calorie, empty nutrition food to your little one.
Yes, I realize that parents ultimately make food choices for their children. I was just very shocked to be told by a health care "professional" that I should feed my daughter ice cream instead of apple sauce (among many suggestions).
As a parent you want to do what is best for your child and many see a MD as an authority. Unfortunately by feeding crap to your toddler you increase the overall number of fat cells in their body, making it more likely that in later life, weight will be a consideration for them.

I think the majority of it is the parents’ fault. But as a parent of an overweight child – I think it is hard for outsiders to know what we go through.
Yes, I do treat my daughter. Just today I took her out for Chinese food. I plan on taking her out for 3 more big "eating out" days this year. Once around her birthday, once when we do back to school shopping, and once around Christmas. I also take her out to a fast food place once a week or so. But I download the nutritional facts from their websites before hand and only let her choose from the 3 or 4 meals that I think will be closest to healthy.
In the morning and at dinner I try to keep it reasonable. Serving of fruit with breakfast, two servings of vegetables or 1 vegetable and 1 fruit with dinner. No high-fat meats, sweets are only served once or twice a month. I blend a piece of fresh fruit with milk and ice for an ice cream substitute. … Seriously, I try to get my kid to eat healthy.
But when she is at school, daycare, or visiting relatives – I have less control over what she eats. I have to let other people watch her. As a single mom – if I don’t work overtime, our whole family will be in trouble. She has learned how to get what she wants out of them and I really don’t have anyone better to watch her. (Example, for lunch today she had sausage, eggs, and a hotdog for lunch. It really upset me, but considering there was a death in the family this morning – I didn’t feel it would be right to lecture the person who was watching her on nutrition.)
I think a little of it is my daughter’s own fault. She is the one too stubborn to follow my food related rules. I feel bad saying it – but it’s the truth. And she is probably going to regret it later. (Although, we are slowly getting it under control.)
I admit it is mostly my fault for not being able to hire a "perfect" nanny. But I refuse to take all the blame for my daughter’s size and behavior problems. (Which by the way, aren’t so bad by most peoples’ standards. But I know my daughter can do better.) And I don’t give other parents all the blame either.
By the way, I am not talking about the parents who have like a 100 pound 5 year old who demands to eat a bunch of junk. That kind of stuff totally scares me! And that kind of stuff (where the parents give in and let their kids eat 5 hotdogs in a row) is 99% the parents’ fault. Maybe their kid is demanding and will, like my daughter, manage to get what he/she wants when away from home. But that is no reason for them to cave in when their kids request junk at home. … I use to stock up on sweets / junk once or twice a year when it was on sale at the grocery store. But when my daughter got old enough to get into it herself, I realized that it could be a problem and stopped stocking up so much. I now have some holiday candy, 2 cake mixes, sugar, and a hidden 12-pack of soda. All are out of her reach, out of site, and for the most part out of mind. And I bet the majority of that stuff will still be put up in the pantry this summer because I am not going to fix it until we have special occasions.
